PRP INJECTIONS IN ORTHOPEDICS

What is PRP?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is autologous blood that contains platelets higher than normal.

Normal platelet count is 4.5 × 105/μL, but PRP has 4-5 times the normal value.

How does PRP work?

Platelets secrete growth factors like platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and epithelial growth factor (EGF), which improve the healing process.

Platelets also have adhesion molecules like fibrin, fibronectin, and vitronectin, which promote bone formation.

How is PRP prepared?

The patient’s own blood drawn is then centrifuged in a machine to separate platelets. This centrifugation allows the separation and collection of the buffy coat layer that contains PRP. This prepared PRP is then administered to the site of injury or into the joints.
